Welcome UCOL Students

SOAROur goal in University College is to connect YOU to UNC Charlotte. We work to connect you with:

  • faculty and advisors
  • potential majors
  • campus resources
  • peers

All of the evidence shows that this first year is one of the most challenging periods in a student's college career, but also one of the most rewarding. Our goal is to provide you with a menu of options that are all designed, in different ways, to help you get the most out of your first year and to make the transition.

Options to Consider Right Now

  1. Get an introduction to UNC Charlotte by coming to SOAR (Student Orientation, Advising and Registration). SOAR is your first opportunity to meet your advisor, meet other new students, and select your courses for the first semester at UNC Charlotte.  Registration is open and all University College students are required to attend SOAR; sign up on the SOAR website.

  2. UNC Charlotte Learning Communities help students transition through academic and social challenges by providing small, supportive living and learning environments. You will interact closely with UNC Charlotte faculty, staff and peer mentors through areas of common interest, enroll in 2 or more of the same courses in both the Fall and Spring semester, and in many cases live together in the same residence hall.

For example, the University College/College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (UCLAS) Learning Community is a one-year program for entering freshmen who have not yet declared a major and for entering freshmen who have declared a major from most of the available programs in the CLAS. The University College Transfer Stduents Learning Community is a one-year program that supports the academic transition and social engagement of transfer students to UNC Charlotte.

You can get a full list of the various Learning Communities and more information at Learning CommunitiesPlease note, you do have to apply to take advantage of the Learning Community program and (where relevant) housing; information is on the Learning Communities websiteApply soon!

Options to Consider When You Attend SOAR

Academic Advisors: Your Trusted Guides

You will be faced with many options as you begin your life as a Charlotte 49er. Remember, your best source of information about all of these options, academic and co-curricular, is your advisor. Staff in the University Advising Center (for UCOL students) and in the advising offices of all of the Colleges know about all of these programs and how they might benefit first-year students. Talk to your advisor during SOAR and during the school year to see how the various programs at the University can help you succeed.

University College Supports ALL UNC Charlotte First-Year Students
